RESEARCH UPDATES & NEWS
> From Dr. Pimentel on X:
Jan 23: "In this massive study by one of the best microbiome research groups in the world, Rifaximin worked in IBS by pushing the microbiome away from the abnormal signature, not damaging the microbiome." PMID: 39243395
Jan 27: "Interesting article just out summarizing the importance of vinculin in IBS, SIBO and scleroderma and others. Anti-vinculin is very important in our work to diagnose IBS-D and M [IBS diarrhea and mixed] as well as future therapies. Very nice." PMID: 39863082
Feb 2: "Great news from DDW 2025. This will be a huge year. Big results on three new therapies for SIBO/IBS, IMO (intestinal methanogen overgrowth), and ISO (intestinal sulfide overproduction). Patients have been waiting a long time for drug therapies."
Mar 14: "Locked and loaded. Good to go from FDA for the next generation multicenter drug trial for IBS-D. We will monitor SIBO and ISO as the driving cofactor. If all paperwork completes on time, first patient in trial in May. We had to self fund this trial. No more waiting!"
Mar 17: "Important new study! Colon cancer appears to be associated with methane producers in the gut like Methanobrevibacter smithii and methane production pathways. We have shown the same archaea causing IMO [Intestinal Methanogen Overgrowth] on breath test. PMID: 39490771

- Influence of menstrual cycle and oral contraception on taxonomic composition and gas production in the gut microbiome PMID: 40153295
-
Summary: This study explored “the relationship of OC [oral contraception] use and the microbiome to gas production, which can cause symptoms“.
“We found a strong correlation between H2 [hydrogen] and CH4 [methane] concentrations and an interaction between OC [oral contraception] use and the menstrual cycle on H2 and CH4 production. We also identified several taxa associated with both high levels of H2 and CH4 production and OC use.” Microbial richness was greater on day 21 vs day 2 of cycle.
